The Aden group, together with French volunteers and Israeli assistance, prevented the royalist movement from collapsing for the time being. But in 1966, British Prime Minister Harold Wilson announced that the British would withdraw from Aden.

He believed the Israelis had revealed their intention to occupy the West Bank and to regard Jordan as an enemy rather than as a partner in trying to maintain a precarious coexistence. Hussein became obsessed with what he believed to be an Israeli betrayal. Israeli Prime Minister Eshkol was furious with the IDF because of the raid. In May 1967 the Israeli government wanted Jordan to keep out of any war with Egypt, and it had no plans for the conquest of the West Bank or East Jerusalem. The Israelis sent Hussein no fewer than three messages saying they had no hostile intent towards Jordan.
