The banjo grew in popularity after the Civil War; by 1880 it was the most widely used fretted instrument in the South, frequently being played alongside the fiddle. ”32 The banjo became a familiar instrument in the rhythm sections of the early jazz bands of New Orleans. 33 Parlor music was the popular recreational music of affluent white society, and in some ways it filled a cultural niche similar to that of the back porch music that was being played in poorer households and in logging camps. The actual tunes and knowledge of musical theory were different and whites viewed parlor music as a cultural achievement, but both were intended to entertain.

However, although these musicians played in a similar style they did not necessarily produce a similar sound.
