All pictorial art can be considered in terms of subject matter on the one hand and form on the other, where these two terms mean something like what is depicted, and how it is depicted. 4). The subject matter is the same, but the formal properties of the works are very different. In one the shapes are relatively flat, features such as the folds in clothing are quite stylised, and the space in which the figures are situated is only suggested and not even coherent across the picture.
