On a more basic level, the diversity of foods and flavors can be among life’s richest pleasures.

My first chapter, “Bringing Canned Food Back to Nature: Ernest Hemingway’s ‘Big Two-Hearted River,’” considers this early short story by Hemingway which centers on a camping meal.
