Enemy naval vessels would be another matter, however. On 2 June the frigates Alarm and Echo sent to lie on the Cay Sal bank sighted five sail: the Spanish frigate Thetis, the armed store ship Phoenix, and three smaller vessels, all part of a convoy from Havana to collect timber for the shipyard. The Alarm and Echo engaged the Thetis and Phoenix for over 30 minutes and forced them to strike their colours. A brig and a schooner were also taken, but the remaining schooner escaped back up the channel to take news of the British fleet to Havana.

In 1759 the attempt to take Martinique ran into trouble because of the close terrain of the interior. Martinique's jagged coastline has 300ft cliffs rising almost perpendicularly from the sea, and its mountainous interior with peaks rising over 5,000ft, riven with deep ravines, in 1762 was covered with tropical forest and thick thorns, and dotted with cane plantations. For French irregulars sniping and ambushing from concealed and often entrenched positions, this camouflage country was so perfect a deserter complained he 'found no enemy to fight'.
