Unlike Lear, Oedipus never achieves peace, is never fully reconciled, and must die alone amid thunder and lightning, closer to the daimons of the earth than to humanity. Scene: None of the extant plays requires more than a single door. The altar is needed for Jocasta's prayer and sacrifice (919a21). No other sets are necessary. Several references to "children" present an obvious metonymy for Oedipus' relation to his people (cf. the messenger's "son" at 103031); see also on 1519. If this play begins with a tableau, it would be unique among the surviving plays.
To designate these extra lines. Less frequently the English version has fewer lines. For the reader consulting critical essays, however, the difference between the standard reference to the Greek text and the corresponding passage in these versions will seldom be more than two or three lines. My first priority has been to offer information that will enlarge the reader's understanding of Sophocles' text, his dramatury, style, and the cultural context in which the plays were first produced. In some matters, for example the identification of allusion to myth, there may be relatively little disagreement among scholars.
1519 The received Greek text explicitly recognizes three age groups among the suppliants: children who cannot yet fly far (a metaphor from fledglings); old men, among whom the priest numbers himself; young men of marriageable age (these children . . among the young). Various attempts to emend away this last group seem unwarranted. " Aeschylus (Seven against Thebes 489) and others know a temple of Athena (= Pallas) Onca; the second has not been identified. Ismenus (also a local river) had a cult and was worshipped as a son of Apollo; his sanctuary was southeast of the city.
